Have you ever been tempted to think that ultimate joy could be found in something other than Jesus? “If only I had a better job,” we might tell ourselves, “or better behaved kids, or a bigger home, or more popularity, love, or recognition, then I’d be truly happy."
Unfortunately, you can have all those things—and more—and never experience the ultimate joy that comes from God alone. Here’s the reality: You can have everything but Jesus, but you’ll always be longing for more. Consider that even Alexander the Great once wept in his tent saying, “There are no more worlds to conquer.” Similarly, Tom Brady, after winning his third Super Bowl, once confessed, “Is this all there is?"
On the flip side, if you have nothing but Jesus, you could be “sorrowful, yet always rejoicing… having nothing, and yet possessing everything” (2 Corinthians 6:10). If you have nothing but Jesus, you can “rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20). If you have nothing but Jesus, you can rejoice that you have everlasting life (John 3:16), that you belong to God (Romans 8:15; Ephesians 1:5), and that nothing—absolutely nothing—can separate you from his love (Romans 8:35-39). If you have nothing but Jesus, you have everything you need for joy.
This week, focus on Jesus and discover anew the ultimate joy that comes from knowing him.
